New Weightlifting Equipment
The Gladiator Weightlifting Club has over 70 members and since the club formed in 1986 athletes passing through the doors have taken away a wealth of Scottish, British, European and International titles.
It is the hope of founder and coach Alex ,Richardson that these young people will go on to be a great success and will compete in the Olympic Youth Games in 2018.
The Gladiators Weightlifting Club is very much working hard on the Glasgow Commonwealth and Olympic legacies.
“We are involved in the sport of Olympic weightlifting and the area has been synonymous with that for the last 30 years. We have consistently produced at this club at a Scottish, British, Commonwealth and European levels.
“The young people that train at our club range from 9 to 17 and we also have the oldies know as the masters to keep the young lifters right.
“They just recently competed at The Scottish Schools Championships claiming various medals and records, we are now looking forward to attending The British Schools Championships in Castleford Yorkshire. Some of our 16 to 17 year olds are also looking to perform at The Commonwealth Youth Games in The Gold Coast later on in the year.
We are very confident this year that they will all come back with medals from these championships
No matter the competition and where these competitions are held The Gladiators team will be ready to win.”
Alex explained that the experienced girls are lifting between 100lbs and 110lbs and the boys are lifting between 130lbs up to 165lbs which is around one and a half times their body weights.
“The kids are taught proper technique, they lift things in the proper way and they have no stress or strains on their body if they are doing things that are taught well at the beginning.
“People get hurt in any walk of life in any sport if they are taught bad habits in the beginning.”
For The Gladiators weightlifting Club it is also important to change the perception of Easterhouse by highlighting the achievements of the young people.
“The big thing is that in Easterhouse it is always spoke about first and second generation gang fighting / drugs and so forth nobody talks about first and second generation sporting success.
“We’ve got many examples of first, second and third generation sporting success. I think what people have got to understand is that Easterhouse was tagged as the murder capital of Western Europe and tagged as having the lowest life expectancy rate in Western Europe through direct links with childhood obesity and poverty.
“We are fighting hard for this facility to become the Glasgow Centre of Excellence for weightlifting. Having a centre of excellence for any sport in an area like Easterhouse says a lot about changing perceptions. We are not all about gang fighting and territoriality, crime and drugs.
“We are a vibrant community and we have kids who are willing to work hard.”
This is where the challenge is as we need to keep the funds coming in to maintain this great club and this is where we are looking at the community to assist us, we are in desparte need of new equipment (weights) to enable our lifters to become future champions.
CAN YOU ASSIST: If you can donate it would help our youngsters achieve their dreams, any amount would be great it costs us at least £6000 for new training and cometition weights
